Richard van Dijk

Welcome

Richard van Dijk

Showcasing a selection of my life’s work and a peek behind the scenes at the processes involved in the ancient craft of forging blades.

Originally trained as a jeweller in Holland in the 70’s, I emigrated to New Zealand, initially to Dunedin and now at Ngatimoti in the Neslon area. I have been a full-time blade-smith for over 25 years and have exhibited and sold my work internationally, having also been commissioned by Weta Workshops for The Hobbit movies

My inspiration is varied and includes traditional Scottish knives like Sgian Dubhs and Dirks.

I specialise in forging pattern-welded steel a technique also known as Damascus steel. I also create plain carbon steel knives for kitchen and outdoor use

To complement my blades, I use NZ native & exotic timber, antler and bone which may be inlaid with jewels and other precious metals
